St. Simon the Zealot - San Simón el Zelote

The holy, glorious and all-laudable Apostle Simon the Zealot was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, referenced in Matthew 10:2-4 and other places in Holy Scripture. His feast day is May 10.

Simon was born in Cana of Galilee and was one of the Twelve Great Apostles. He was the bridegroom at the wedding feast where Christ changed the water into wine (John 2:1-11). Because of that miracle, St. Simon left his home, parents and bride to follow Christ. After Pentecost, he preached the Gospel in Mauritania in Africa.

He ended his missionary work in Georgia. St. Simon was tortured and crucified by the pagans in Abkhazia.

Early Life of Saint Simon

It is interesting to note that most of what we know about Simon Peter came from the Bible itself. Therefore, not much is actually known about his early life. We do know, however, that he was born in a place called Cana, which was in Galilee. Historians trace his birth year to around 1 B.C., about one year before Jesus Christ was born.

Simon Follows ChristAs told in the Bible, Simon began to follow Christ shortly after Jesus turned water into wine in Cana, the place of Simon’s birth. The story itself is told in the Book of John and it is said that Simon was a guest at this wedding. Shortly after it he left his home to become one of Christ’s followers. He is known, therefore, as being one of the earliest followers of Christ. He was also known for being a passionate follower and often displayed signs of having a slight temper.

Later Years of Saint SimonSimon Peter is one of the apostles, or disciples, that was martyred. He is thought to have died around 68 A.D. He spent his life traveling and preaching about Jesus. His travels took him to the Republic of Georgia where he was eventually captured and tortured by pagans in Abkhazia. Before that, he spent some time in African preaching about the Gospel of Christ.

Simón nació en Caná de Galilea y fue uno de los Doce Grandes Apóstoles. Fue el novio en la fiesta de bodas donde Cristo transformó el agua en vino (Juan 2: 1-11). Debido a ese milagro, San Simón dejó su hogar, padres y novia para seguir a Cristo. Después de Pentecostés, predicó el Evangelio en Mauritania en África. 

Terminó su trabajo misionero en Georgia. San Simón fue torturado y crucificado por los paganos en Abjasia.

La Vida Temprana de San Simón 

Es interesante notar que la mayor parte de lo que sabemos sobre Simón Pedro proviene de la Biblia misma. Por lo tanto, no se sabe mucho sobre su vida temprana.
