Advent is the time when the Christian liturgical year begins. It is a season of spiritual preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas, liturgical name given to Christmas, when Our Lord Jesus Christ's birth is celebrated.
The first Sunday, which marks the beginning of the liturgical year, takes place the following Sunday after the Solemnity of Jesus Christ The King, last Sunday of the former liturgical year. Advent lasts about twenty-two or twenty-eight days, due to the variations of the number of days of the week days previous to Christmas. Therefore the first Sunday of Advent happens between November 27th and December 3rd.
Although Advent precedes immediately Christmas season, from the spiritual point it has the goal of preparing the believer for the Second Coming of Christ and the everlasting meeting with God.

Advent Fast: Through the discipline of fasting, when practiced with prayer, repentance, and almsgiving, it is believed that by tempering the bodily desire for food, other passions are tempered as well, and that the soul can orient more away from worldly needs and more towards spiritual needs. Through this practice one is better enabled to draw closer to Christ, and engage in the continuous and synergistic process of becoming more Christ-like. While fasting is practiced with the body, it is important to note that emphasis is placed on the spiritual facet of the fast rather than mere physical deprivation.

El Adviento es el tiempo con el cual se inicia el año litúrgico cristiano. Consiste en un período de preparación espiritual para la solemnidad de la Natividad, nombre litúrgico de la Navidad, en la cual se celebra el nacimiento de Nuestro Señor Jesúcristo.
El primer Domingo de Adviento que marca el comienzo del año litúrgico tiene lugar el Domingo siguiente al de la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey, último domingo del año litúrgico anterior. La duración del Adviento varía entre veintidós y veintiocho días, dado que abarca los cuatro domingos previos a la solemnidad de la Navidad acompañados por un número variable de días de semana. En consecuencia, el primer Domingo de Adviento se ubica entre el 27 de noviembre y el 3 de diciembre.
Si bien el Adviento precede inmediatamente al tiempo de Navidad, desde el punto de vista espiritual tiene por finalidad la preparación del creyente para la Segunda Venida de Cristo y el encuentro definitivo con Dios.

Ayuno de Adviento: a través de la disciplina del ayuno, cuando se practica con la oración, el arrepentimiento y la limosna, se cree que al moderar el deseo corporal de comida, otras pasiones se atenúan también, y que el alma puede orientarse más lejos de las necesidades mundanas y más hacia las necesidades espirituales. A través de esta práctica, uno está mejor capacitado para acercarse a Cristo y participar en el proceso continuo y sinérgico de ser más como Cristo. Si bien el ayuno se practica con el cuerpo, es importante tener en cuenta que se pone énfasis en la faceta espiritual del ayuno en lugar de la mera privación física.
