Barnabas was a Hebrew from the tribe of Levi, he was born in Cyprus; Its original name was that of Joseph, but the Apostles changed it to that of Barnabas, which means 'hard-working man'. He is mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, in the fourth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles; the sale of their properties is mentioned.

The Saint was chosen to take the Gospel to Antioch, instruct and guide the neophytes. For this mission he obtained the cooperation of St. Paul. The two preachers were very successful; Antioch became the great center of Evangelization and it was there where, for the first time, the name of Christians was given to the faithful followers of Christ. Some time later, they were entrusted with a new mission and left to follow it, accompanied by John Marcus. First they moved to Seleucia and then to Salamis, in Cyprus. Then they came to Paphos, where they converted the Roman proconsul Sergio Paulo, they sailed to Perga in Pamfilia, where Juan Marcos abandoned them. In Iconium, in Lycaonia, they were about to die stoned. In Lystra, St. Paul miraculously healed a paralytic and the pagan inhabitants confused them with gods. On their return to Antioch they passed through all the cities they had visited to confirm and ordain priests. Around the year 60 or 61, St. Barnabas had already died. It is said that he was stoned to death in Salamis. Another tradition presents him as a preacher in Alexandria and Rome and also as the first bishop of Milan.
