St. Michael Archangel's Apparition on Mount Gargano - May 8th.

Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen.

Oratio Papa Leo XIII

The Mass of May 8 in honor of the Apparition of the Archangel St. Michael on Mount Gargano is another of the illustrious victims of the first pruning suffered by the Roman Missal before the post-conciliar reforms. The new code of rubrics of the antipope John XXIII relegated it to the section of the masses pro aliquibus locis as well as the mass of the Invention of the Cross (May 3) and that of San Juan before Portam Latinam (May 6), which splendidly opened the month of flowers. The reason was the duplication of parties of the same owner. The Archangel St. Michael, in fact, is also commemorated on September 29. However, while this feast also recalls all the angelic spirits, that of today was peculiar to the great prince of the heavenly hosts, having been extended to the universal Church by St. Pius V.

The apparition referred to today's calendula took place in the year 490 in southern Italy, more precisely on Mount Gargano, an important massif that forms a promontory in the Apulia region on the Adriatic coast (it is known as the spur of the boot of Italy). A neighbor of Siponte had lost a precious specimen of his herd of bulls and when searching for it he noticed that the animal was in the entrance of a cave. He shot an arrow towards him to scare him away and to return, but the dart turned and returned to the rancher, who, astonished, went to tell the episode to the bishop. He arranged three days of fasting and prayers and went to the cave. While praying outside her, a spirit appeared to him who introduced himself as the Archangel Michael, "the one who permanently attends in the presence of God." He told the bishop that he wanted a church built in that cave.

The prelate doubted and in this season the town was threatened by the invasion of the barbarians. St. Michael reappeared to the bishop and assured him that there was nothing to fear if there was sincere and firm faith, promising to ward off danger, as it was, for the invaders withdrew. Even so the bishop continued with his vacillations and decided to go to the Pope, going to Rome, where he presented the case. The Supreme Pontiff prescribed the same thing that he had arranged the first time he heard the story: three days of fasting and prayer before the cave, which was put into practice. The holy Archangel manifested himself for the third time and this time unequivocally. He told the bishop that it was not necessary since he consecrated the cave because it had already been sanctified with the angelic presence. As he entered his interior, he saw with astonishment a splendid altar covered with red cloth and with a crystal cross. At the entrance, the miraculous footprint was imprinted, as if wanting to witness the supernatural visit.
The St. Michael Sanctuary on Mount Gargano became an important pilgrimage destination and contributed to the spread of devotion to the Archangel and had echoes elsewhere in Christianity. In Rome, for example, one hundred years after the appearance in the Gargano, Pope St. Gregory I stopped the plague that had been declared by the invocation of St. Michael, whom he had seen on top of the mausoleum of Hadrian brandishing a sword. In the Middle Ages the place became a fortress: the famous and impregnable Castel Sant'Angelo. In the 8th century, the bishop of Avranches in Normandy built a sanctuary after having visited St. Michael three times (as in Mount Gargano). A promontory was also chosen: the one that rises up against the Norman-Breton coast and becomes an island due to the phenomenon of high tide, bearing the famous name of Mont Saint-Michel, which still houses today a magnificent abbey with its imposing castle . Mount Gargano was still the scene of prodigies when the Archangel appeared again to stop a terrible plague unleashed in 1656. Focus of great spirituality, it is no coincidence that in its vicinity stands the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio was sanctified. Pietrelcina.

Oratio

DEUS, qui, miro órdine, Angelórum ministéria hominúmque dispénsas: concéde propítius ; ut, a quibus tibi ministrántibus in caelo semper assístitur, ab his in terra vita nostra muniátur. Per Dóminum… R. Amen.

Epistola

Léctio libri Apocalýpsis beáti Joánnis Apóstoli (Apoc. I, 1-5).

Vae mundo a scándalis. Credo.
Offertorium

(Apoc. VIII, 3 et 4) Stetit Angelus juxta aram templi, habens thuríbulum áureum in manu sua, et data sunt ei incénsa multa: et ascéndit fumus arómatum in conspéctu Dei, allelúja.

Secreta

R. Amen.
