Siendo emperadores de Roma Septimio Severo y Antonino Caracalla, en Turba, ciudad de Mauritania, fueron presas dos matronas casadas, cuyos nombres eran los de Perpetua y Felicitas. Después de padecer cruelmente en la cárcel fueron presentadas al juez, y les intimaron la obediencia de los edictos de los Emperadores. Pero ellas, que adoraban con toda su alma a Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, y tenían fortalecida la fe, respondieron, con valentía superior a la debilidad de su sexo, «que jamás abjurarían la santa doctrina dé los cristianos, y que deseaban y querían morir con ella». El juez las mandó a azotar despiadadamente, y después las volvieron a la cárcel. Con objeto de regocijar al pueblo, las llevaron al anfiteatro para arrojarlas a las fieras.
Las santas mujeres marchaban a tan horrible suplicio con la alegría en el corazón y en el rostro, cantando oraciones dirigidas al Señor que las deparaba el sin igual contento de sacrificar sus vidas por su amor. Escuchando el presidente las oraciones de los mártires, cometió la cobarde debilidad de mandar que las abofeteasen cruelmente; empero, lejos de conseguir sus deseos, Perpetua y Felicitas, alzando más la voz, entonaron nuevos cánticos a Dios.
Colocadas en el anfiteatro, atadas ya las manos, soltaron a los leones para que las despedazasen, lo que se verificó en medio del anfiteatro, presentándose nuestras Santas con la mayor alegría y entregando sus espíritus entre oraciones y cánticos. El día 7 de marzo del año del Señor 205 fue el martirio de nuestras Santas, imperando Alejandro Severo.


Los cuerpos de las Santas se trasladaron a Cartago. San Agustín y Tertuliano mencionan a las Santas Perpetua y Felicitas.
